An ECU file prepared last month may not describe the car as it stands today. If the vehicle has returned from a dealer, another garage or a software campaign, mention that before asking anyone to reuse an earlier calibration.
A fresh identification matters
AutoTuner advises taking a new read before writing a tuned file because the ECU may have received a manufacturer update since the previous read. Its guidance warns that writing an obsolete file can cause communication or starting problems. The responsible technician should follow the current procedure for the identified ECU and tool.
This is not a reason to avoid manufacturer updates. It is a reason to check the present software rather than assuming the old job record is still current.
Put the visits in date order
Send the date of the original read, the date the file was prepared and the date of any subsequent workshop visit. Include the earlier and current identification reports if available. Keep each report labelled so the reviewer can see what changed without opening a series of unexplained screenshots.
Tell us whether the previous file was actually installed or merely supplied. “We have the file” and “the car was programmed with this version” are different facts. If you do not know, say so rather than treating delivery as proof of installation.
Agree the current job before writing
Ask the installer to confirm which identification and file version the proposed operation uses. If the software has changed, the file provider should review the request against that change before the vehicle is programmed.
For an AXION enquiry, attach the history and describe your intended outcome. A review may require a current read or further identification through a supported method. Do not attempt a downgrade simply to make an old file fit, and do not overwrite a manufacturer’s update without an agreed, suitable repair or calibration plan.
If an unsuccessful write has already occurred, stop experimenting and provide the complete tool log and warning. Explain exactly what was attempted. That gives an assessment a much firmer starting point than trying several files in succession.
