A plug-in hybrid may run its engine even when the battery display shows usable charge. Heating requests, operating conditions and the vehicle’s control strategy can influence engine operation. The useful question is whether the behaviour matches the specific vehicle’s manual or represents a new unexplained change.
Record the request and result
Note the selected driving mode, outside temperature, demisting settings and any message explaining why electric operation is unavailable. Compare with previous behaviour under similar conditions. Include recent software, battery or engine work.
Do not disable heating needed for visibility or try to prevent the engine from starting through wiring changes. If a fault warning accompanies the change, preserve the complete scan. Tell the workshop whether the engine runs briefly, stays on throughout the trip or starts only with particular controls selected. Charge remaining alone cannot prove that the hybrid controller is operating incorrectly.
