A dashboard that goes blank and a dashboard that works normally while another controller stores a communication fault need different investigations. Save the complete scan before clearing it. The reporting control unit and the full description are as important as the number.
What do these codes describe?
U0155 describes lost communication with the instrument cluster. VAG 01317 can also refer to communication with the cluster, but a “Check DTC Memory” entry instead directs attention to faults stored in that controller. These descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable diagnoses.
Ross-Tech identifies wiring, connections and communication checks in its references. Read the U0155 reference and the 01317 variants. Neither code alone proves that the dashboard needs replacing.
Build a useful fault record
- Note whether the needles, display, illumination and warning lamps fail together.
- Record whether the engine starts and whether the problem changes with temperature or rain.
- Include all modules that cannot be reached by the diagnostic tool.
- Explain any recent battery, dashboard, wiring or replacement-module work.
- Keep a photograph of the warning message and the cluster part label if already accessible.
A workshop can use the vehicle wiring information to check cluster power, grounds and network operation. If several controllers disappear at once, the wider communication pattern matters. If only one unit is affected, the investigation can be more local. Avoid removing the dashboard solely because a generic scanner names it.
Repair, replacement and coding
Ask what must be retained before exchanging a cluster. Vehicle configuration, security-related compatibility and recorded vehicle data require model-specific handling. Keep the original unit available until the proposed route is agreed.
