Seeing “ABS Control Module” in a scan report is not enough to identify a faulty ABS pump. With VAG code 01316, the accompanying wording determines the next diagnostic question. Keep the original report rather than recording only the five-digit number.
Two descriptions, different next steps
Ross-Tech distinguishes “No Signal/Communication” from “Check DTC Memory”. The first calls for investigation of communication, including relevant wiring and connections. The second means the ABS controller’s own fault memory needs to be read. A code reported elsewhere in the vehicle can therefore be a consequence of a brake-system fault rather than a diagnosis of that reporting module. Read the 01316 technical reference.
What to include in your enquiry
- The complete vehicle scan, including the ABS controller’s own entries if accessible.
- Which warning lamps remain on and whether they appeared together.
- Whether the fault is present continuously or only after moving.
- Details of recent wheel, brake, battery, coding or wiring work.
- The ABS hardware identification and any existing workshop test results.
The distinction between “the tool cannot communicate” and “the tool communicates and reports a sensor fault” is particularly useful. Do not describe both simply as an ABS module failure. A clear report helps decide whether diagnosis should begin with the vehicle, a circuit or a potentially repairable unit.
Before arranging a module assessment
Brake and stability warnings need proper assessment; an online code description cannot establish whether the vehicle is safe to drive. Tell the workshop about any change in braking behaviour and follow the vehicle handbook’s warning guidance. Do not remove a hydraulic unit without an agreed repair and reinstatement procedure.
