An exterior light that stays off does not automatically mean the footwell module needs replacing. Record the fault, identify the circuit and ask for an assessment before buying a used FRM.
Is it output protection or a failed module?
HELLA documents a 2005 BMW 1 Series E87 case in which an electrical fault caused the FRM to disable the affected exterior-light output. Its guidance is to identify and repair the electrical defect, then carry out the manufacturer-specified FRM reset and recheck the fault memory. This is a specific diagnostic example, not a diagnosis for every BMW lighting problem.
What to include in a BMW FRM repair enquiry
- Vehicle identification model, year, registration and the chassis series if known.
- Exact symptoms which lamps or body functions fail, whether the fault is constant and when it first appeared.
- Scan results the full code, its description and the controller reporting it. Note whether the diagnostic tool can communicate with the FRM.
- Module label a sharp photograph showing every number, rather than a cropped image of one code.
- History previous bulb or wiring repairs, water ingress, battery work, coding attempts and any replacement module.
Do I need to send the module or bring the car?
If the failed circuit has not been investigated, start with vehicle electrical diagnosis. Removing the FRM does not provide the bench team with the car’s wiring, lamps or other connected components. If there is evidence of an internal electronics or data problem, contact us to discuss a module assessment.
Before buying a replacement FRM
Keep the original unit. Send label photographs of both the original and proposed replacement, together with the vehicle details. Ask about compatibility and any coding requirements before purchase; a visually similar case is not enough information to promise a working replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Can every lighting fault be fixed by resetting the FRM?
No. A reset is not a substitute for finding the cause. The relevant diagnostic procedure and any circuit fault must be addressed first.
Can I post an FRM from elsewhere in the UK?
