A DSG warning, flashing gear display or loss of drive needs the gearbox identified correctly before a repair can be planned. Start with the vehicle details, gearbox code and full diagnostic report.
Why “seven-speed DSG” is not enough
Volkswagen describes several DSG families with different applications. The gearbox family, control-unit hardware and software matter when assessing a replacement or planning diagnostic work. Do not order a donor using only the number of gears or the appearance of the mechatronic assembly.

Electronics and hydraulics need separate consideration
Volkswagen’s DQ200 mechatronics information explains that the unit combines electronic control with hydraulic operation. Its New Zealand campaign information describes a hydraulic pressure-loss fault on some units. That illustrates why a drive problem does not, by itself, prove an electronic controller fault. The overseas campaign is not evidence that a particular UK vehicle is affected; ask the UK manufacturer or dealer to check your vehicle identification number.
Your DSG assessment checklist
- Identify the vehicle: make, model, year, engine and registration.
- Identify the transmission: gearbox code, controller part number and a complete label photo if accessible.
- Keep the scan report: include full fault codes, suffixes, text descriptions and which controller stored them.
- Describe the behaviour: affected gears, whether reverse works, when the warning appears and whether symptoms change with temperature.
- Explain prior work: replacement modules, software work, adaptation attempts and any mechanical or hydraulic findings.
Planning the right repair route
Where the root cause remains uncertain, arrange diagnosis of the complete vehicle. For a suspected controller electronics fault, ask AXION whether bench assessment is suitable and exactly which item to send. A removed unit cannot reproduce every condition that occurs on the vehicle.

Before a donor unit is purchased
Send photographs of both labels and explain whether original data remains accessible. Ask what coding, basic settings or adaptation may be required after fitting. “Plug and play” should only be confirmed for the specific supported combination.
