A scanner reporting an internal control-module fault raises an important question: is the problem inside the controller, in its software or in the conditions under which it operates? Save the report before clearing it. The exact module and vehicle matter as much as the code.
What these P060x codes refer to
- P0601: a checksum test has flagged the controller’s memory contents.
- P0602: the controller reports a programming problem.
- P0603: a problem with memory retained between operating cycles.
- P0604: the controller’s working memory is implicated.
- P0605: its read-only memory is implicated.
- P0607: the controller has failed a performance check.

Identify the module that stored the code
An engine-only scan can leave out information from the transmission and other controllers. Ask the garage for the complete scan, including controller identification, code status and any additional suffix. The same short description should not be used to condemn every module on the vehicle.
Useful checks before an ECU enquiry
Ask the technician to document battery condition, supplies and earths at the affected module, connector condition and the relevant manufacturer test results. Tell us whether the fault started after a flat battery, jump start, software update, remap or donor installation. A code that returns immediately and one recorded once during interrupted work present different evidence.
Programming recovery or electronic repair?
Keep the original controller and any original backup files. Do not buy a donor solely because its casing looks the same.
