VAG 01044 after a module replacement or coding change

If 01044 appeared after fitting a replacement module, stop and record what changed before trying another coding value. The old part number, new part number and first scan after installation are often more useful than a list of settings tried afterwards.

What the code points to

Ross-Tech describes 01044 as an incorrectly coded control module. Its guidance includes checking module coding and, where relevant, the gateway installation list. It also records vehicle-specific exceptions and situations involving an incorrect control unit or coding bridge.

This is why a coding string copied from another car is a poor starting point. A similar model can have different equipment. The task is to establish what belongs in this vehicle and whether the installed hardware supports it.

A useful before-and-after record

Keep the original scan and configuration backup if the previous garage saved them. Add a simple timeline of the work. For example, say that a warning first appeared immediately after a replacement was fitted, rather than describing every warning as part of the original failure.

Label a donor module clearly. Do not describe its settings as original coding merely because they were present when it arrived. If the original module still communicates, tell the workshop before it is discarded or overwritten.

Questions to settle before programming

  • Does the replacement part number suit the vehicle and its equipment?
  • Which module stores 01044, and what is the complete fault description?
  • Are other controllers reporting communication or configuration faults?
  • What will be checked after the coding work, including the affected vehicle functions?

Correcting a configuration entry and repairing a physical fault are separate jobs. A quote should make clear which work is proposed and what remains uncertain. Where braking, steering or restraint warnings are present, arrange the appropriate inspection before using the vehicle.

AXION accepts programming, coding and adaptation enquiries. Send both module identities and the scan so the supported route can be checked before booking. There is no universal coding file that makes every donor unit suitable.
