Vehicle programming, coding & module cloning
Replacing an ECU, TCU or body module? Send us the original and replacement labels before buying a donor. We will check which programming or data-transfer route is suitable.
Choose the right replacement route
Programming, cloning and adaptation describe different jobs. AXION Automotive reviews the module, vehicle and available original data before recommending a route. A matching vehicle model alone is not enough to confirm that a replacement unit is suitable.

Cloning
Transfer of supported, recoverable data from an original module to a compatible donor.
Programming
Supported software or configuration work for the identified module and vehicle.
Adaptation
Vehicle-specific setup requirements that may apply after a component is replaced or repaired.
Dealer-level programming and compatible upgrades
Discuss software programming, module coding, configuration and adaptation with AXION Automotive. Supported functions depend on the vehicle, control unit and required authorised software access. Tell us the exact outcome you need, including any replacement hardware or equipment upgrade.
An upgrade enquiry should include the original equipment, proposed components, part numbers and the vehicle specification. We will review compatibility and the work involved before confirming suitability. Coding alone does not make every replacement or retrofit compatible.
Calibration and software support
Alongside replacement-module work, AXION offers ECU testing, calibration review and suitable remapping enquiries. We also provide software-file support for compatible applications, with the vehicle, current software and requested outcome reviewed before work is agreed.
Garages should include the tool, read method and whether the file comes from a Master or Slave setup. We will confirm acceptance and the transfer arrangement first. Explore ECU calibration, testing and file support.
Multi-brand vehicle programming and coding
Our programming enquiries cover most vehicle brands, including BMW and MINI, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, Nissan, Renault, Jaguar and Land Rover, Tesla, and Volkswagen Group vehicles. The exact model, control unit, software version and required access determine what can be supported. Send the vehicle identification and the job you need completed before making an appointment.
For garages, the useful starting point is the complete scan, the original and replacement part numbers, and the steps already attempted. An ODIS session is one route for suitable Volkswagen Group work; other makes require their own compatible tools and procedures. See VAG ODIS support for that specific service or garage technical support for a multi-brand enquiry.
Coding, software programming and adaptation
Coding configures supported vehicle equipment and options. Software programming writes an appropriate software version to the controller. Adaptation or basic settings completes the supported learning or setup procedure. Some jobs need more than one of these steps. None of them makes incompatible hardware suitable for the car.
Before work starts, agree the intended result, required access, assessment charge and any vehicle-side checks. For a remote session, the garage needs the agreed interface, software, stable power support and a responsible technician at the vehicle. We confirm those requirements and whether remote work is suitable before booking.
BMW head-unit firmware repair from our workshop
On 18 October 2026, we repaired a repeatedly restarting head unit from a 2021 BMW 2 Series by upgrading the software and reflashing the firmware. The same day’s work also included separate DQ200 and DQ500 control-unit cloning jobs.
Read the BMW head-unit repair notes. For another vehicle, send the unit identification and describe the restart behaviour and any previous software work.
Before you buy a donor module
Send clear label photographs of both units, their full part numbers and the vehicle details. Explain why the original is being replaced and whether it still communicates. Include any prior programming attempt, repair or replacement.
We will discuss compatibility and any information still required. Some replacements need work on the vehicle after bench preparation. A universal plug-and-play result cannot be assumed.
Bench work or vehicle appointment?
Some data-transfer jobs can be assessed through the postal route. Other programming or adaptation work needs the vehicle, an installer’s diagnostic equipment or a separate procedure. Agree the arrangement before sending units or travelling.
Programming and cloning questions
Do you need the original module?
For cloning, the original and its data are normally central to the assessment. Tell us if it is missing, damaged, previously opened or unreadable.
Can a non-communicating unit still provide data?
That depends on the module and damage. An assessment is needed before recoverability can be confirmed. See our module data recovery service.
Will coding fix an electrical fault?
Programming is not a substitute for finding an underlying hardware or vehicle fault. Include the diagnostic findings so the proposed work addresses the actual problem.
What should my installer know?
Confirm the supplied work and any remaining coding, adaptation or vehicle checks before refitting. Keep the job information with the vehicle’s repair record.
