Seeing transmission control module on a scan does not settle whether the gearbox electronics need repair. With VAG 01315, the words after the code change the next step.
Lost communication or a request to read another module?
Ross-Tech separates 01315 into a no-communication description and a check-fault-memory description. The latter directs attention to faults stored in the transmission controller that affect other systems. The communication version calls for investigation of the data connection and associated diagnostic information.
Ask for the gearbox controller’s own report if it can be reached. A code recorded by the engine or ABS controller is not a substitute for that report. If the gearbox controller cannot be reached, record that result rather than inventing a gearbox fault description.
Explain what the car does
Does the display show the selected gear? Does drive engage? Did the warning appear while moving or at the first start after repair? These observations help the workshop connect the scan to the actual complaint.
Avoid road testing a vehicle with unreliable gear selection or unexpected movement. Tell the booking team if recovery is needed. A postal TCU test cannot, by itself, inspect every connection and operating condition in the complete vehicle.
Why the gearbox identity matters
Ross-Tech includes a software-update note for certain Golf 5 and Golf 6 based vehicles with the 02E six-speed DSG. That is a defined application, not a recommendation to update every transmission showing 01315.
For a garage enquiry, include the transmission code, controller part number and software identification. State whether supply, earth and network checks have been completed, with their results. If a used unit has been fitted, keep the identification of both units and explain which symptoms existed before the swap.
Discuss a TCU or DSG assessment with AXION. The enquiry form can be used by owners and garages. Start with the full wording and the observed fault so the proposed work addresses the right problem.
