VAG 00885 and a starter that does not turn

A car that does nothing when the key is turned needs a more precise description than an engine that will not start. If the scan includes VAG 00885, preserve the complete entry and explain whether the starter operated at all.

The circuit named in 00885

Ross-Tech identifies 00885 with an electrical fault in the ignition switch’s terminal 50 circuit. It can accompany a starter that will not activate. This differs from 00883, which concerns terminal S and is associated with a different set of symptoms.

The 00885 reference includes the electrical part of the ignition switch, wiring, fuses and damaged or corroded contacts among possible causes. The code is not an instruction to replace a body control module without further checks.

Does the engine turn over?

Tell the workshop whether the starter is silent, clicks or turns the engine. The phrase will not start can describe all three, but they lead to different questions. Also mention whether the dashboard behaves normally and whether removing the key changes the radio, locks or interior lights.

There is no need to keep operating a faulty switch to produce a video. A short account of what already happened is useful. Include when the fault began and whether a key, lock assembly, steering-column component or aftermarket accessory was recently fitted.

Keep the electrical switch and the key system separate

A problem in an ignition-switch circuit does not automatically mean the key has lost its programming. Ask the diagnosing garage which part of the starting sequence it has tested and whether the recorded fault matches the customer’s symptom.

For an existing workshop report, include the switch-status observations, circuit measurements and full code descriptions. Do not bridge starter terminals or feed power into the switch wiring as a shortcut; that bypasses the normal starting controls.

Ask AXION about electrical fault finding. If another garage is doing the inspection, it can send its findings with the vehicle details through the repair enquiry form.
