Recording an intermittent car electrical fault

An electrical fault that disappears before an appointment can be difficult to reproduce. A clear record of when it happens helps an electronics specialist decide what to inspect and whether the complete vehicle is needed.

Describe the first event in the sequence

Record what happens first, followed by any warning lights or lost functions. “The dashboard went dark, then the engine stopped” contains more information than “lots of errors”. Include whether other electrical equipment kept working. Make recordings only when safely parked; never handle a phone while driving.

Note the conditions without guessing the cause

Useful details include a cold start or warm restart, rain, time parked, journey length and whether the fault followed recent work. A pattern can guide investigation but does not prove causation. For example, a fault after rain is a reason to investigate moisture, not proof that a particular module has failed.

Collect evidence while the fault is present

If a technician can safely scan the vehicle during the event, keep that report as well as any later scan. A module that cannot communicate during a symptom may communicate again after a restart. Record what changed between those two observations. Avoid repeated resets simply to make the warning disappear before an assessment.

Include the repair and battery history

Tell the assessor about replacement modules, aftermarket equipment, jump starts, flat batteries, water ingress and earlier programming. Include dates and invoices where available. A previous repair is part of the investigation history, not automatic evidence that the earlier repairer caused the present fault.

Choose a route that can reproduce the problem

A removed module cannot recreate every wiring, voltage, temperature or network condition found in the vehicle. Describe the symptom before sending a unit by post. AXION can discuss whether a module enquiry or a Didcot vehicle assessment is the more appropriate starting point for the information available.

Information to send with your enquiry

  • Date, mileage and conditions at each occurrence.
  • Exact order of symptoms and warning messages.
  • How long the event lasted and what restored operation.
  • Scan reports before and after the symptom, where available.

Discuss the next step with AXION

AXION Automotive handles specialist vehicle-electronics enquiries from its Didcot workshop and through UK postal module assessment. Send your vehicle details, full scan report and module labels before booking or posting a unit. Assessment, repair suitability and programming requirements depend on the particular vehicle and module.
