BCM & BSI body control module repair

BCM and BSI testing, component-level repair and supported data recovery for owners and garages. Tell us which lights, locks, wipers or windows are affected so we can agree the right assessment before a module is replaced.

Repair support for body electronics

A body control module is involved in several everyday electrical functions, so its symptoms can be confusing. We look at the fault details before discussing repair, data recovery or a replacement. The wiring and connected components may need checking too.

The 16-pin diagnostic connector provides scan-tool access. A body-module fault still needs checks of the relevant power supplies, wiring and connected components.

We support garages and vehicle owners through agreed postal jobs and Didcot drop-offs. The full part number and diagnostic information help us establish the scope before you send anything.

What to include in your enquiry

  • Lighting, indicator, central locking, window or wiper symptoms.
  • Starting or key-recognition problems and when they occur.
  • Any battery drain investigation or diagnostic communication faults.
  • Evidence of water ingress, corrosion or previous repair.
  • A clear module-label photograph and exact fault codes.

These symptoms can have causes elsewhere in the vehicle. Wiring, power supplies and connected components need appropriate diagnosis; a symptom list is not confirmation of a failed BCM.

A communication code does not identify a failed BCM

U0140 means a control unit has reported losing communication with the body control module. It does not, by itself, tell you to replace the BCM. A garage needs to establish which units can communicate, whether the fault is current or stored, and what happened to the vehicle’s power supply when it occurred.

Send the complete vehicle scan, including the unit that recorded each code and any suffix shown by the diagnostic tool. A photo of one warning message often leaves out the information needed to separate a network fault from an internal module problem.

As one vehicle-specific example, Stellantis bulletin 9100215 for certain 2022–2024 WD vehicles directs technicians to check BCM connections and associated wiring when investigating U0140. Its repair procedure applies to the vehicles and parts listed in that bulletin, not every car with the same code.

Before removing or buying a body module

  • Keep the original unit and photograph its complete label. A matching vehicle model alone does not establish donor compatibility.
  • Tell us about recent battery work, jump-starting, water leaks, accessories or an earlier replacement. Include the sequence of events.
  • Ask your garage to retain its scan and electrical test results before codes are cleared or parts are disconnected.
  • Contact us before posting anything. Intermittent wiring, battery drain and faults involving several units may need the vehicle present.

Need the fault located first? See vehicle electrical diagnostics. Already have module identification? Use our part-number search to help organise your enquiry; a catalogue match still needs compatibility confirmation. For current assessment options and starting prices, see repair assessment appointments.

What body-module testing needs to separate

One output has failed. A lamp, lock or wiper fault can arise inside the module, in the wiring or at the connected load. Useful evidence includes whether the module receives the command and whether the circuit can carry the required load. Replacing a relay or output driver without checking the external fault can lead to another failure.

Several functions stop together. Shared power supplies, earth connections and network communication need attention before separate parts are condemned. Record which functions fail at the same time and whether the behaviour changes with rain, temperature or battery condition.

A replacement will not work correctly. Configuration, software and authorised key or immobiliser matching may still be required. Send both labels and any original backup. A donor with the same connector shape is not proof of compatibility.

BCM repair, BSI repair and power-distribution faults

Body controllers, comfort modules and under-bonnet fuse or relay units can have similar symptoms but different jobs. Tell us the exact unit named by the diagnostic tool and photograph its label. We confirm whether the enquiry concerns component-level repair, data recovery, supported cloning or vehicle-side diagnosis before agreeing the work.

BSI repair after replacement or data work

If the fault began after a replacement, clone or programming attempt, preserve the original BSI and every available backup. Send both module labels, the diagnostic report and the sequence of work. Incorrect configuration and an electronic fault need different investigations; another write should not overwrite the only original copy.

Our published fault guides explain unexpected starting after Peugeot 407 BSI work, Peugeot 307 lights and wipers operating after locking, and what to preserve after the wrong BSI file is written. Use these to organise an enquiry, not to assume the same repair applies to your car.

What determines a BCM or BSI repair quote

The quote depends on the identified unit, damage and work required. Ask whether it covers the initial assessment, electronic repair, data recovery, donor preparation, vehicle coding and return delivery. Some jobs need only one part of that work; others need a vehicle-side diagnosis first. We agree the scope before proceeding. View current assessment options or send the part number for advice.

Repair, recovery or donor transfer?

Electronic assessment

Inspection of the board and reported fault helps establish whether component or track repair is appropriate.

Water-damage assessment

The condition and extent of corrosion determine the options. The vehicle’s source of water ingress also needs attention.

Compatible donor work

Send identification for the original and proposed donor. Data availability and hardware compatibility must be checked before transfer.

BCM and BSI repair questions

Which units can I enquire about?

Send details of your BCM, BSI, comfort or related body electronics module. Include its manufacturer and part number rather than relying only on the vehicle model.

Will a replacement work with the existing keys?

This depends on the system, available data and the replacement. Discuss key recognition, coding and configuration requirements before buying or fitting a donor.

Can water-damaged modules always be recovered?

No. Recoverability depends on the affected components and condition of the stored data. The assessment determines what can be attempted.

Should I send the vehicle?

Ask us first. Some jobs are suitable for postal module assessment; vehicle diagnosis or programming may require different arrangements.

For related work, see module programming and adaptation or data recovery.
