TCU repair, testing and compatible donor cloning

A gearbox warning does not identify the failed component by itself. AXION Automotive assesses the electronic control unit and its data to establish whether repair or a compatible donor solution is practical. We work with UK garages, transmission specialists and vehicle owners through postal enquiries and local drop-offs in Didcot.

Electronic repair

Assessment of power supply, communication and component-level faults in the transmission controller.

Donor data transfer

Compatibility checks and supported transfer of recoverable data from the original TCU to a suitable replacement.

Mechatronic electronics

Investigation of the electronic control side of DSG and automatic transmission systems.

Recent DQ200, DQ500 and DQ381 work

Our workshop jobs on 18 October 2026 included DQ200 control-unit cloning, a separate DQ500 cloning job, and DQ381 pressure-sensor replacement with a data backup. These are examples of the different electronics and data services we carry out across DSG systems.

Read the DQ200 and DQ500 cloning notes or the DQ381 pressure-sensor job. Suitability for another unit depends on its identification and diagnostic findings.

Symptoms to include in your enquiry

  • Gearbox malfunction message, flashing gear display or limp-home mode.
  • No communication with the transmission controller.
  • Intermittent gear selection, loss of drive or missing reverse.
  • Sensor, solenoid or communication fault codes from a full diagnostic scan.
  • Water damage, corrosion or a previous unsuccessful repair.

These symptoms can also originate in wiring, power supplies, hydraulic or mechanical components. Vehicle diagnosis is needed alongside any bench assessment; a fault code alone is not proof that the TCU needs replacing.

P0700 or U0101 on the scan report?

P0700 generally records a request from the transmission controller to illuminate the engine warning lamp. The useful next information is the fault detail stored in the transmission system. U0101 reports lost communication with the transmission controller. Neither code, on its own, identifies a repairable internal TCU fault.

For example, GM bulletin PIC4740D for the listed Cadillac models links a group of warning and communication symptoms to possible unseated transmission-connector pins. That is a model-specific example of why wiring and connections need checking before a controller is condemned; it is not a repair instruction for every transmission.

Keep the full scan, including the code suffixes, current or stored status and available freeze-frame data. Tell us whether the fault happens cold, after warming up, after recent work or only when selecting a particular gear. If the vehicle loses drive or cannot select a gear safely, arrange recovery rather than continuing to test it on the road.

Identify the gearbox before choosing a service

A vehicle badge and year can cover more than one transmission. Include the gearbox identification and full controller label, with hardware and software details if the scan provides them. Keep the original unit until the repair and data options have been discussed.

Use the module part-number catalogue to help identify an enquiry, or ask about electrical fault finding if the problem has not yet been isolated. Our assessment booking page lists current options and starting prices. Final repair scope and cost depend on the findings.

Gearbox control unit testing and the limits of a bench repair

A transmission control unit, also called a TCU, TCM or gearbox ECU, processes sensor information and controls supported transmission outputs. The assessment must distinguish an internal electronic fault from a supply, wiring, sensor or actuator problem. Describe whether communication is lost completely or only when the fault occurs.

A removed controller cannot reproduce every condition inside a working transmission. Oil temperature, hydraulic pressure, clutch wear and the complete vehicle network can affect the symptoms. We discuss what can be tested on the supplied unit and which checks your installer still needs to complete.

After electronic repair or supported cloning, the vehicle may still require the correct software, coding, basic settings or adaptation. Agree those responsibilities before the unit is sent. For pressure-related DSG codes, read our P17BF, P189C and P0841 diagnostic guide; those codes do not establish that a controller alone is faulty.

Send the right information first

  1. Vehicle details registration, make, model, year and engine.
  2. Module identification a clear label photograph, full part number and gearbox code if known.
  3. Diagnostic evidence exact fault codes, scan report and when the fault occurs.
  4. Repair history previous coding, fluid ingress, replacement parts or attempted repairs.
  5. Donor details photographs and part numbers for both modules if you need cloning.

Contact us before buying a donor or sending a complete mechatronic assembly. The correct item to send depends on the transmission and requested work.

How the repair enquiry works

  1. Request an assessment. Send the details above through our contact page.
  2. Confirm the route. We discuss module suitability, the proposed assessment and the information still needed.
  3. Pack and send. Once agreed, use secure packaging and tracked delivery, or arrange a Didcot drop-off.
  4. Assessment and quotation. Findings determine whether electronic repair, data recovery or donor transfer is suitable.
  5. Verification and refitting. Confirm any coding, basic settings or adaptation requirements with your installer before the unit is refitted.

TCU repair questions

Can a faulty gearbox ECU be repaired?

Some electronic faults are repairable. The answer depends on the module, damage, parts availability and what testing establishes. We assess the original unit before recommending the next step.

Will a cloned TCU be plug and play?

That depends on the hardware, software, available original data and the vehicle. Donor compatibility must be checked first. Some installations still need coding, basic settings or adaptation on the vehicle.

Can you recover data from a non-communicating TCU?

A failed diagnostic connection does not always mean the data is lost. Recovery depends on the memory and processor condition. We cannot confirm recoverability from the symptom alone.

Do you repair mechanical gearboxes?

This service concerns transmission control electronics. Mechanical and hydraulic faults need diagnosis by an appropriate transmission specialist.

What will it cost and how long will it take?

Send the part number, fault details and repair history for an assessment. Scope, availability and current workload determine the quotation and estimated completion time.
