A battery current reading can come from different sensing principles. A shunt uses the small voltage drop across a known resistance. A Hall-based sensor responds to the magnetic field produced by the current. Both require appropriate electronics and calibration to provide a useful measurement.
Check what the displayed value represents
Different diagnostic tools may use different signs for charging and discharging. Confirm the label and units before calling a negative reading a fault. Also establish whether the value is measured, calculated, filtered or temporarily unavailable.
For an intermittent problem, keep the operating state with the reading. Was the car charging, ready to drive, heating the cabin or switching off? A single number without that context may be perfectly reasonable or completely misleading.
A sensor is more than its connector
Replacement compatibility includes the measuring range, interface, calibration and installation requirements. A physically similar component should not be selected solely because it plugs in. The workshop needs the exact unit and vehicle specification.
If an implausible-current fault accompanies an inaccurate charge display, both symptoms belong in the same enquiry. That relationship gives a starting point for investigation, but it does not prove the sensor is the cause. High-voltage current paths must be assessed using the appropriate isolated equipment and vehicle procedure.
Arrange an assessment
For EV and hybrid diagnostics, send the vehicle details and fault report to AXION. We support enquiries from drivers and garages. Workshop, postal and remote options depend on the job and are confirmed before booking.
