Battery open-wire detection and a misleading cell-voltage reading

A battery monitor relies on sensing connections between the cells and its measurement electronics. If one of those connections is interrupted, the reported value may no longer represent the cell correctly. Open-wire detection is a diagnostic function intended to identify this kind of sensing-path problem.

A low reading needs a credible measurement path

An alarming value on a scan should be assessed with the monitor’s related faults and the manufacturer’s test procedure. It is premature to order cells solely because one channel appears different when an open-wire warning is also present.

For a referral, keep the complete battery scan, including subcodes and which channels were named. State whether the pack has been disturbed, suffered impact or water exposure, or had previous internal work. Do not clear the record simply to see whether the numbers look better afterwards.

Separate the cell from the monitoring circuit

The repair decision should identify whether the evidence points to the cell, sensing connection, connector or monitoring electronics. A generic BMS label covers several parts of that measurement chain.

There is no safe universal owner test involving access to battery sensing wires. The connections can be at hazardous potentials. Arrange a qualified assessment and confirm transport requirements before moving a damaged or warning-equipped vehicle. AXION can review the report and explain the appropriate next step.

Arrange an assessment

For EV and hybrid diagnostics, send the vehicle details and fault report to AXION. We support enquiries from drivers and garages. Workshop, postal and remote options depend on the job and are confirmed before booking.
