CAN FD bit-rate switching and two speeds in one frame

CAN FD can use one bit rate for arbitration and a faster rate during the data phase. Bit-rate switching, commonly abbreviated BRS, indicates that change. CAN FD can also operate without switching to a higher data rate, so CAN FD and faster data are not identical statements.

Tool settings need to match the network

An interface that supports classic CAN may not support CAN FD. A CAN FD-capable interface still needs the correct configuration for the target network. Failure to decode a capture is not, on its own, proof that the vehicle wiring is defective.

For a diagnostic referral, record the interface model, software version and network being tested. Preserve the original error message and any capture settings. Avoid changing several settings and losing track of which combination produced each result.

Establish the correct access route

The vehicle’s diagnostic connector may reach a network through a gateway rather than expose every internal bus directly. Confirm the intended test point and manufacturer procedure before drawing conclusions from absent traffic.

Send AXION the affected module and function with the communication report. We can assess whether the problem concerns tool compatibility, the diagnostic route or an electrical fault. Guessing bit rates or probing unrelated connectors is not a reliable substitute for the correct network information.

Arrange an assessment

For complex electrical and network diagnostics, send the vehicle details and fault report to AXION. We support enquiries from drivers and garages. Workshop, postal and remote options depend on the job and are confirmed before booking.
