CAN FD Support: Why an Older Diagnostic Interface May Be Insufficient

Before diagnosing a newer vehicle’s communication failure, check whether the diagnostic interface and software support its required protocols. A familiar connector shape does not establish complete tool coverage. Record the exact interface model and software version.

Separate tool limitations from vehicle evidence

An unsupported function, missing vehicle selection and a genuine no-response result should be kept distinct. Consult the tool maker’s coverage information for the specific application. Do not assume that updating an app alone upgrades the capabilities of every connected interface.

Keep the test comparison useful

If a suitably supported tool has already been used, include its result and any difference in accessible controllers. Avoid treating multiple attempts with the same unsupported setup as independent confirmation that a module is dead. Preserve the customer’s actual symptoms alongside the connection complaint.

NXP includes CAN and CAN FD in its vehicle connectivity technologies. For AXION, send the vehicle details, tool information and full errors. The first assessment decision should establish compatible diagnostic access before recommending controller replacement or a speculative programming operation.
