ECU virtual reads and actual reads for a file-service enquiry

A file labelled “original” needs some context. It might be a saved read from the car, a manufacturer-version file supplied through a tool, or a file renamed by a previous workshop. Those descriptions are not interchangeable when you ask for calibration work.

What the reading method tells us

AutoTuner explains that its virtual read supplies a stock file matched to the identified ECU software. It can therefore return a stock file even when the vehicle is already modified. Its normal read retrieves the data currently available through the selected reading operation. Check the tool’s instructions for the exact ECU and method.

The practical consequence is simple. A virtual read can be useful for a supported file service, but it does not demonstrate what a previous tuner changed in the car. That question needs its own evidence.

Label the file before you send it

Keep the file as produced by the tool and preserve its original filename. In your enquiry, state the tool, the selected reading method and the date. Add the ECU identification report and explain whether the car is believed to be standard, previously calibrated or of unknown history.

If there are several files, identify which one came from which operation. Avoid putting a stock reference and a current read in the same folder with names such as “final” and “final2”. A short description is more useful than guessing which file the reviewer wants.

When a virtual file is unavailable

Send the software identification and the tool’s message for review. Do not substitute a file from a similar engine or assume that an alternative reading method is available. The supported route needs to be checked before any connection or programming work begins.

AXION can assess an ECU file-service enquiry once the file type and vehicle are clear. We will confirm the scope and accepted transfer method first. A software-file review is separate from proving that the vehicle is mechanically sound or that a proposed calibration is suitable for it.

Keep an untouched copy of the material you started with and include the recent repair history. If the car has a fault, describe that first so it can be considered before any performance-related work.
