Inverter temperature protection and reduced EV drive power

An inverter can reduce output or shut down in response to temperature information. Temperature sensing and protective action are part of the power-stage design. Texas Instruments’ TIDA-00794 reference design, for example, monitors a sensor associated with an IGBT module and provides a thermal shutdown function.

Reduced power does not locate the fault

On a vehicle, the cause needs to be established from the fitted system’s data and fault record. Actual overheating, a cooling problem and an implausible temperature signal are different findings. The warning on the dashboard may not distinguish them.

Record when the reduction occurs. Useful details include ambient conditions, journey duration, charging immediately beforehand and whether performance returns after cooling. Avoid deliberately repeating a severe overheating event to produce evidence.

Ask for the temperature and its source

A diagnostic report should identify which temperature was measured or calculated and what operating limit applied. A figure from a reference circuit or another model is not a vehicle-specific pass or fail threshold.

For an assessment request, send the complete scan and any cooling-system work history. AXION can review whether the next step is an electrical, control or cooling investigation. Replacing the inverter should follow evidence that the assembly requires it, rather than the presence of reduced power alone.

Arrange an assessment

For EV and hybrid diagnostics, send the vehicle details and fault report to AXION. We support enquiries from drivers and garages. Workshop, postal and remote options depend on the job and are confirmed before booking.
