An EV’s external pedestrian warning sound is separate from parking-sensor beeps, navigation prompts and warning chimes inside the cabin. If a sound seems to have disappeared, first identify which one it is. That helps avoid investigating the wrong speaker or control system.
Check what your particular car is meant to do
Equipment and operating conditions vary with model, build date and market. The 2017–2023 Tesla Model 3 US manual, for example, describes an external warning sound during specified low-speed and reversing conditions on equipped cars. It also notes that some earlier cars may not have the system. Those details should not be used as a universal speed threshold or equipment check for a UK vehicle.
Use the handbook that matches your vehicle. A sound being difficult to hear from the driver’s seat does not by itself establish a failed speaker. Equally, an absent external warning should not be dismissed because the infotainment audio still works.
Describe what changed without staging a risky test
- Give the make, model, year and the name of any warning shown on the dashboard.
- Explain whether you mean an external sound or an alert heard only inside the cabin.
- Describe what you noticed during ordinary use, including the direction of travel.
- Mention recent bumper repairs, collision damage, water ingress or software work.
- Send an existing recording if it was made safely; there is no need to recreate the problem in traffic.
Do not stand in the vehicle’s path, ask someone to walk in front of it, or disconnect a warning system for comparison. Pedestrians may not hear an approaching EV. Tesla’s guidance says to arrange service if the pedestrian warning system is not operating and not to rely on it to make others aware of the vehicle.
