Why LFP battery voltage does not give a simple charge percentage

Lithium iron phosphate, usually shortened to LFP, has a relatively flat open-circuit voltage curve through much of its working charge range. That makes a small voltage difference difficult to translate into a reliable difference in charge percentage. A battery-management system needs more context than one voltage reading.

Identify the battery before comparing advice

The same vehicle model can have different battery versions. Establish the fitted pack and market specification before applying charging advice from another owner. An instruction intended for one chemistry or software version may not apply to yours.

If the percentage or predicted range changes unexpectedly, note whether it followed a charge, a period parked, a software update or unusually cold weather. Include any battery-related warning and the exact wording of the scan report.

A voltage snapshot has limits

Similar cell voltages at one moment do not prove equal usable capacity. Equally, a displayed charge correction does not by itself prove that a pack has lost capacity. The assessment needs to explain which measurement supports the conclusion.

Do not use this general explanation as an instruction to charge or discharge to a particular level. Use the vehicle’s own current guidance. AXION can review the symptom history and confirm whether the required battery or control-system investigation is within the supported scope.

Arrange an assessment

For EV and hybrid diagnostics, send the vehicle details and fault report to AXION. We support enquiries from drivers and garages. Workshop, postal and remote options depend on the job and are confirmed before booking.
