Fuel temperature sensor codes and an implausible cold-start reading

Fault-code directory · ECU and electrical assessment

Fuel temperature influences some engine-management calculations. If the reading is implausible, the controller may use a substitute value or store a warning even though the engine still starts. A sensor code should be assessed alongside the wiring and the actual conditions.

Codes covered

P0180 · P0181 · P0182 · P0183 · P0184

P0180–P0184 describe the fuel-temperature sensor A circuit, its range or low, high and intermittent signal conditions. The component may be integrated into another assembly. Do not assume that a separate, replaceable sensor is fitted simply because the scan tool names one.

Evidence that helps narrow the fault

  • Check the reading before the first start after a long rest. Compare it with plausible surrounding temperatures while allowing for tank location, sunlight and residual heat.
  • Look for abrupt steps during a logged test. A smooth temperature rise is different from a signal that jumps instantly to an extreme.
  • Identify shared references or ground connections and review related sensor codes. Follow the correct electrical test for the fitted sensor rather than applying power to an unknown circuit.

Choosing the next repair step

A repair might involve a connector, harness or integrated component rather than an ECU. If the input remains wrong at the ECU with the external circuit verified, controller investigation may be appropriate. Record any recent fuel-system or filter work because a disturbed plug can be more informative than the age of the sensor.

Does a circuit-high code mean the fuel is too hot?

It describes the electrical signal condition. The relationship between signal level and temperature depends on the circuit, so the scan description must be interpreted using the correct sensor information.

Talk through the fault with AXION

Send the make, model, year, full scan report and a short description of when the fault happens. Include recent repairs or programming attempts. If you do not have a scan, describe the symptoms in your own words.

Workshop assessments are arranged by appointment in Didcot, Oxfordshire. UK-wide postal module testing and remote support are available for suitable work after compatibility and scope are agreed. Please contact us before removing or posting a module.
