EV charger and converter communication faults after a low-voltage event

Fault-code directory · EV and hybrid diagnostic enquiries

Type 2 charging cable connected to an electric vehicle
Type 2 charging connection. Record both vehicle warnings and charge-point messages.

After a low-voltage battery problem, an EV may store communication warnings involving charging or power conversion. Some may be historical consequences of the supply event, while others may still be active. The difference needs to be established before expensive components are condemned.

Codes covered

U019B · U0293 · U0296 · U0297 · U0298 · U0299

This selection covers communication with a charger controller, hybrid or EV powertrain control and AC/DC or DC/DC converter controllers. The code identifies a missing communication relationship, not proof that a high-voltage power stage has failed.

Confirm the full description, suffix and reporting module for your vehicle. These are diagnostic starting points, not a parts replacement list.

Evidence that helps narrow the fault

  • Keep the original scan before clearing it and note whether the warnings return with the low-voltage system correctly supported according to the vehicle procedure.
  • Record which controllers are currently accessible and whether charging or ready operation is available. A group of missing modules can point to a shared supply, wake or network path.
  • Include the low-voltage battery specification, replacement history and any recent software or charging work in the enquiry.

Choosing the next repair step

An active missing module needs its supply, wake and communication conditions assessed before an internal failure is concluded. Historical codes should be documented rather than mistaken for a current parts list. High-voltage components should remain closed until the appropriate competent assessment and isolation procedure have been arranged.

Can a communication code explain why charging stops?

It may be part of the explanation, but charging depends on several systems and permissions. The complete charging and vehicle report is needed to identify the stage that is failing.

Talk through the fault with AXION

Send the make, model, year, full scan report and a short description of when the fault happens. Include recent repairs or programming attempts. If you do not have a scan, describe the symptoms in your own words.

Workshop assessments are arranged by appointment in Didcot, Oxfordshire. UK-wide postal module testing and remote support are available for suitable work after compatibility and scope are agreed. Please contact us before removing or posting a module.
