EV contactor feedback and a contactor that may be stuck closed

High-voltage contactors switch the battery’s main power connection. The controller’s request to open a contactor and the actual state of the power circuit are separate things. That is why monitoring matters when a vehicle reports a stuck or welded contactor.

An instruction is not proof of isolation

Contact wear or welding can prevent a mechanical contact from behaving as commanded. Diagnostic assessment must follow the vehicle’s prescribed method of establishing the actual state. A scan-tool command or an audible click is not a safe substitute for proving isolation.

For a repair enquiry, include the exact code, its status and whether the warning followed charging, a start attempt, an impact or previous high-voltage work. Explain whether the vehicle still enters ready mode. Do not assume that switching it off has made a suspect circuit safe.

The cause matters as well as the contactor

A proposal should consider the circumstances that produced the fault, including any relevant precharge or power-path findings. Replacing a named component without investigating the event can leave the reason for failure unresolved.

Keep the vehicle out of service if its instructions require that, and agree recovery arrangements with a qualified provider. AXION can assess the information supplied and confirm support for the particular system. This topic does not provide a procedure for opening or testing a live pack.

Arrange an assessment

For EV and hybrid diagnostics, send the vehicle details and fault report to AXION. We support enquiries from drivers and garages. Workshop, postal and remote options depend on the job and are confirmed before booking.
