Useful data logs for an ECU calibration review

A graph without a vehicle description or file version is difficult to interpret. Before sending a data log for calibration review, connect it to the job it belongs to and explain what question you want the reviewer to answer.

What a data log records

AutoTuner describes datalogging as recording measurements supplied by the ECU. Available values depend on the supported ECU and selected parameters. Its documentation encourages controlled dyno testing. A log therefore needs the measurement names, units and test context, rather than only a screenshot of one peak value.

This page is about preparing an enquiry. It is not an instruction to carry out acceleration tests on public roads.

Send the record and the circumstances together

Include the original exported record where available, the date, vehicle details and installed calibration version. State whether the log was recorded before or after a change. Describe any symptom, warning or interruption during the session.

If the car has changed since the log was recorded, list the work. A log from before a repair or software update may still be useful history, but should not be described as the current state of the car.

Ask a specific question

Useful requests include reviewing an existing result, investigating a reported symptom or deciding what further evidence is needed before calibration work. Avoid asking a file provider to approve the entire car from one graph. The reviewer needs to explain what the available information can and cannot establish.

For AXION, send the report details and the intended review first. Agree any further test plan with the responsible workshop. Tests should use a suitable controlled setting and qualified personnel; the driver should never operate a laptop or watch logging software while driving.

Where a log is shared through a link, check who can view it and keep the link within the agreed job correspondence. Do not include unrelated customer information. A clear, correctly identified record usually helps more than a large bundle of unnamed screenshots.

The review scope and any additional diagnostic work will be confirmed for the actual vehicle and concern.
