EGR position codes with rough running or reduced power

Fault-code directory · ECU and electrical assessment

An EGR position warning can accompany rough running, hesitation or a reduced-power message. The important question is whether the valve is failing to move, the position signal is unreliable, or the controller is seeing an electrical problem in the circuit.

Codes covered

P0404 · P0405 · P0406 · P0407 · P0408 · P0409

This code group covers EGR control or feedback behaviour, including performance and low or high sensor-signal reports. The letters and descriptions in the full scan identify the relevant circuit. EGR flow codes and EGR position codes are related evidence, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses.

Evidence that helps narrow the fault

  • Record requested and reported EGR position together under a permitted test condition. A command changing without a matching response needs further investigation, not an immediate controller replacement.
  • Check the connector, reference supply and ground path against the correct wiring information. A shared reference problem may produce warnings in apparently unrelated sensors.
  • Review mechanical restriction and the condition of the intake or EGR passage where relevant. A good electrical signal does not prove that the expected gas flow actually occurs.

Choosing the next repair step

A valve, its feedback circuit and the ECU output each require different evidence. If a replacement valve is proposed, confirm the part, installation procedure and any required learning first. If the output is suspected, assess the external load before reconnecting a repaired controller. Repeating a reset without finding the cause may simply bring the same warning back.

Is EGR deletion the answer to a recurring code?

The appropriate route is to diagnose and repair the fitted system. Removing warnings or changing software to conceal an unresolved emissions fault does not establish that the vehicle has been repaired.

Talk through the fault with AXION

Send the make, model, year, full scan report and a short description of when the fault happens. Include recent repairs or programming attempts. If you do not have a scan, describe the symptoms in your own words.

Workshop assessments are arranged by appointment in Didcot, Oxfordshire. UK-wide postal module testing and remote support are available for suitable work after compatibility and scope are agreed. Please contact us before removing or posting a module.
