EGR cooler bypass faults and temperature performance

Fault-code directory · ECU and electrical assessment

An EGR cooler bypass fault can involve the control circuit, the mechanism that directs exhaust gas or the temperature result the ECU expects. A description that mentions the cooler does not automatically mean that the cooler assembly has failed.

Codes covered

P245A · P245B · P245C · P245D · P2457

P245A–P245D refer to the bypass-control circuit or its behaviour. P2457 concerns cooling-system performance in the EGR context. Keep the complete wording and suffix from the scan. The vehicle may use an electrical actuator, a vacuum-controlled arrangement or a different feedback strategy.

Confirm the full description, suffix and reporting module for your vehicle. These are diagnostic starting points, not a parts replacement list.

Evidence that helps narrow the fault

  • Establish which bypass arrangement is fitted and whether the reported fault is electrical or functional. That determines the appropriate test equipment and expected response.
  • Compare command, movement and available temperature data. An actuator may receive a command but fail to move the mechanism fully, or it may move while the temperature result remains wrong.
  • Inspect disturbed hoses, connectors and linkages after recent engine work. Consider coolant or exhaust-system conditions only where the vehicle-specific diagnostic route calls for them.

Choosing the next repair step

A useful report separates a missing command, an incorrect response and an unsatisfactory thermal result. These are different repair decisions. Electrical diagnosis may lead to wiring, actuator or controller work; cooling performance can require mechanical investigation. Do not condemn the engine ECU simply because it records the warning.

Should the warning be ignored if the vehicle still drives?

Persistent warnings need assessment, even if the immediate symptom is mild. Follow any temperature or stop instructions shown by the vehicle, and include the circumstances of the warning when arranging diagnosis.

Talk through the fault with AXION

Send the make, model, year, full scan report and a short description of when the fault happens. Include recent repairs or programming attempts. If you do not have a scan, describe the symptoms in your own words.

Workshop assessments are arranged by appointment in Didcot, Oxfordshire. UK-wide postal module testing and remote support are available for suitable work after compatibility and scope are agreed. Please contact us before removing or posting a module.
