FlexRay faults and why a CAN-bus test is not enough

When a diagnostic report mentions FlexRay, first establish which network the workshop has actually tested. Calling every communication problem a CAN-bus fault can hide an important difference in the vehicle’s design.

Think of a timetable for messages

NXP describes FlexRay as a vehicle communication system with a scheduled static part and a dynamic part. The static section gives messages defined time slots. The dynamic section accommodates traffic with different timing needs. The protocol can use one or two channels, depending on the design.

A useful picture is a timetable: a message needs the right place in the schedule, not merely two connected wires. That analogy explains why identifying the network and its configuration matters. It is not a wiring diagram or a test procedure.

A readable module can still have a communication complaint

Ask what the diagnostic tool could access and which message or connection the fault report describes. The ability to read an identification screen answers one question. It does not, on its own, explain every communication fault stored elsewhere in the car.

Keep the reporting controller separate from the controller named in the fault. Also preserve the exact wording. A missing message, an invalid value and a module that cannot be reached should not all be rewritten as the same failure.

What a garage should send

Include the vehicle identification, full scan and relevant network diagram reference. For measurements already taken, identify the test point, equipment and vehicle state. A waveform photograph without a scale or connection point is difficult for another technician to interpret.

Use manufacturer information for the actual topology and test method. Do not transfer a resistance target, pin assignment or wake-up procedure from an unrelated CAN network simply because both systems carry vehicle data.

Repairing the cause

Before ordering a controller, ask which findings point to the unit, its connections or its configuration. If a replacement has already been fitted, include both part numbers and the scan from before the change.

AXION can review complex electronics diagnosis enquiries. Send the existing test results and explain which questions remain unresolved so the next inspection has a clear purpose.
