Mercedes GLE and GLS electrical faults after condensation leaks

Several unrelated electrical problems after damp carpets or air-conditioning use deserve a joined-up investigation. A replacement controller will not address a leak that is still reaching the vehicle electronics.

A published GLE and GLS example

HELLA identifies incorrectly routed air-conditioning condensation drain hoses as a potential source of electrical trouble on specified 2018–2021 GLE and GLS 167 vehicles. Water entering the cabin can reach electrical components and contribute to leakage currents or short circuits. HELLA advises checking the relevant campaign status with the manufacturer. This is a published technical example, not an AXION customer repair record. Read HELLA’s GLE/GLS technical note.

A wet area does not identify every damaged component

The affected vehicle and local campaign status need confirmation. The note does not mean that every GLE warning is caused by a drain hose, or that every wet controller can be repaired. Record the location of the moisture and the sequence of warnings before parts are removed or cleaned.

Prepare the vehicle history

  • Which functions failed first, and whether the fault changes after rain, washing or air-conditioning use.
  • Where dampness was found and whether a leak repair has already been completed.
  • A complete vehicle scan and photographs already available from the inspecting garage.
  • Any modules, connectors or carpets removed, repaired or replaced.
  • The vehicle year and the numbers on any unit proposed for assessment.

Tell us if the vehicle has been exposed to standing water or shows signs of overheating. Avoid repeatedly powering visibly wet electronics to see whether the fault has gone. AXION can discuss a vehicle-side diagnosis alongside a module enquiry, with the repair scope agreed from the actual findings.

AXION supports owners and independent garages with body-module and electrical fault enquiries. Send your existing report through our repair enquiry form, or call 07440 134303. We will confirm whether the vehicle is needed at our Didcot workshop or whether a removed module is suitable for UK postal assessment.
