Two signals can each be present while their relationship is wrong. That distinction matters when P0016 appears, especially after timing or engine repairs. Buying another sensor without reviewing the whole finding may leave the original problem unexplained.
Correlation is the key word
Ross-Tech’s VAG entry describes P0016 / 16400 / 000022 as an incorrect relationship between bank 1 camshaft and engine-speed information. Its guidance includes timing and cam-adjuster checks. Read the P0016 reference.
The engine-specific notes are not a universal timing procedure. The correct engine code and manufacturer information remain essential.
Keep the repair history attached
Tell the workshop about chain or belt replacement, engine rebuilding, oil-pressure warnings and previous camshaft work. Include whether the fault existed before those repairs. If it appears only at a particular temperature, record that condition without repeatedly provoking a potentially damaging fault.
For a technical referral, label camshaft and crankshaft waveform channels and state where they were measured. Keep any verified mechanical findings alongside the captures. A waveform comparison should identify its reference vehicle and operating conditions rather than relying on an unlabelled internet image.
Is an ECU assessment the right next step?
Ask what has been established about the timing and signal relationship first. If there are abnormal mechanical noises or an oil-pressure warning, stop running the engine and seek professional assistance.
