P0300 and P0301–P0304 after replacing spark plugs or coils

A misfire that returns after new spark plugs or ignition coils can be frustrating. Keep a record of which parts were changed and what happened immediately afterwards. Another replacement chosen from an online discussion may repeat the same uncertainty instead of identifying the remaining fault.

Random and cylinder-specific misfires

P0300 describes a random misfire. P0301 identifies cylinder one, P0302 cylinder two, P0303 cylinder three and P0304 cylinder four. They identify the recorded event, not its cause.

Reference Ford OBD diagnostic descriptions. Confirm the exact vehicle procedure and code suffix; manufacturer examples are not universal test instructions.

Why recent repair work belongs in the diagnosis

Delphi highlights coil damage and incorrectly seated boots as possible contributors to misfire, even during replacement work. A new part therefore does not close the diagnostic question by itself. Source Delphi ignition-coil repair guidance.

Separate the reported cylinder from the component someone believes has failed. Ask the workshop to record whether the same cylinder continues to misfire, whether the symptom changed and which tests support the next step. Ignition, fuelling, mechanical condition and electrical control require different assessment routes.

Prepare a useful fault history

Include the engine code, fuel type, mileage and complete scan. Explain whether the symptom appears during cold start, idle or acceleration, and whether the warning lamp flashes or stays on. Follow the vehicle handbook about stopping or arranging recovery; do not deliberately reproduce severe rough running on the road.

Attach the parts invoice, test report and any before-and-after fault data. If a coil or injector was moved during workshop diagnosis, record the original and final positions and the result. This guide is not an instruction to work on a live ignition system.

When to discuss the ECU

An ECU enquiry is more useful when the garage explains why the controller is suspected after the relevant system checks. Start with electrical fault finding when the cause is uncertain, or ECU assessment for an identified controller concern.

AXION Automotive handles specialist electronics enquiries from Didcot and UK garages. Use our assessment checklist, then send the vehicle details and scan report. Vehicle and component support must be confirmed before booking or posting a unit.
