A transmission report containing both a temperature fault and a speed-sensor fault can look like two unrelated failures. Before quoting for two components, check the fitted transmission and the relationship between its circuits.
The VAG reference for P1740 concerns clutch-temperature monitoring. Ross-Tech points to G509 wiring and sensor checks. On the six-speed 02E DSG, its notes discuss P0716 appearing alongside P1740 and direct attention to the relevant G182/G509 wiring and connections. P1740 technical reference.
A DSG name is not enough identification
The same source has separate notes for the seven-speed 0B5 S tronic. Those list companion entries including P174E, P174A, P179D, P179C, P174F, P174B, P0726 and P17D8 under application-specific technical information. They are not interchangeable definitions or a universal repair-kit list.
Include the gearbox code and controller identification when enquiring. If the scanner gives a manufacturer-specific suffix or additional description, retain it. A photograph of a generic “gearbox malfunction” warning cannot replace that information.
Useful details from the driver and garage
Say whether the warning follows prolonged traffic, appears immediately from cold or began after work on the transmission. Describe any change in gear selection or drive. Include previous fluid-service, harness and mechatronic work without assuming that it caused the fault.
For a garage referral, attach the relevant readings with the conditions under which they were captured. An implausible temperature and a confirmed overheating event need to be distinguished during diagnosis.
