Torque-converter clutch codes and vibration at steady speed

Aisin eight-speed automatic transmission cutaway. The mechanical, hydraulic and electronic systems need to be considered together.

A shudder at steady speed can coincide with torque-converter clutch warnings, but the symptom alone does not identify a faulty solenoid or controller. The assessment needs to relate the vibration to clutch command, slip and the operating state of the transmission.

Codes covered

P0740 · P0741 · P0742 · P0743 · P0744 · P2758 · P2769 · P2770

These codes cover torque-converter clutch circuit, performance, stuck-state and signal conditions. Some describe electrical control, while others describe the result the controller observes. Keep the full gearbox-specific wording because similar code families can use different control arrangements.

Evidence that helps narrow the fault

  • Record road speed, gear, transmission temperature and whether the symptom occurs as the clutch is commanded on or off. Do not attempt to reproduce an unsafe driving condition.
  • Review commanded lock-up and measured slip together. Engine roughness or other driveline vibration can be mistaken for a converter-clutch problem.
  • For electrical codes, inspect the relevant supply, harness and solenoid path. For performance codes, include the fluid, hydraulic and mechanical findings where the procedure requires them.

Choosing the next repair step

The repair route may involve a circuit repair, valve-body work, a converter issue or a separately confirmed TCU fault. A controller code is not a blanket instruction to change the controller. A useful estimate explains the evidence and the tests that remain before a final repair decision.

Can a software update fix a converter-clutch shudder?

An applicable update may be relevant in a specific vehicle, but it is not a universal cure. Confirm the vehicle, software level and applicable manufacturer guidance before proposing programming.

Talk through the fault with AXION

Send the make, model, year, full scan report and a short description of when the fault happens. Include recent repairs or programming attempts. If you do not have a scan, describe the symptoms in your own words.

Workshop assessments are arranged by appointment in Didcot, Oxfordshire. UK-wide postal module testing and remote support are available for suitable work after compatibility and scope are agreed. Please contact us before removing or posting a module.
