Estimated remaining range and indicated fuel level describe different things. A range calculation can respond to recent use, while the gauge represents level through the vehicle’s sensing and display strategy.
Compare actual behaviour
Record recent short trips, idling and changes in driving conditions. State whether the gauge itself behaves erratically or only the estimate changes. If there is a genuine fuel-consumption concern, keep comparable refill records rather than relying solely on the range display.
A workshop enquiry should separate estimation behaviour from a level-sensor fault or engine-running problem. Do not replace a sender or reset the cluster just to restore a previous prediction. Include warnings and recent tank or instrument work where relevant to the assessment.
