A scan mentioning the CAN gateway can make it sound as though the central communication unit has failed. With 01299, the useful first question is which control unit recorded it. Keep that part of the report alongside the code.
One reporting module or several?
Ross-Tech identifies 01299 with the J533 diagnostic interface. Its guidance distinguishes a fault reported by one module from the same entry appearing across several modules. Wiring and control units are among the possibilities; the pattern helps direct the investigation but does not prove which part needs replacing.
For example, an engine controller that can be reached and a gearbox controller that cannot be reached are different observations from a scan that cannot access any vehicle system. Write down what the tool actually reached. A screenshot showing only the gateway code loses that information.
Coding can be relevant on particular vehicles
Ross-Tech also documents a narrower situation involving Passat 3C, Tiguan 5N and MK60EC1 brake electronics, where left-hand-drive or right-hand-drive configuration can be relevant. That note is not a universal instruction to change gateway coding on every car with 01299.
If the warning began after a module replacement or retrofit, give the workshop the original and replacement part numbers. Include an earlier scan if you have one. Leave the existing configuration alone until it has been compared with the fitted equipment.
What to put in a repair enquiry
- The full scan, including the module names and code descriptions.
- Whether the fault is present now or stored from an earlier event.
- Any work on the battery, wiring, gateway or other modules before it appeared.
- The functions that have stopped working, such as starting, gear selection or dashboard communication.
Ask the garage to distinguish the communication checks it has completed from the checks still required. Avoid buying a used gateway on the strength of a code description alone.
Send AXION the report for an electrical diagnosis enquiry. We can confirm whether the vehicle needs to come to the workshop or whether a supported module assessment is appropriate. You can also browse other vehicle-network guides.
