A replacement footwell module that refuses coding needs more investigation than another programming attempt. On an E92 3 Series Coupe, connected equipment can matter as much as the replacement FRM itself.
The documented BMW example
BMW SIB 61 03 22 describes an E92 FRM that cannot be encoded when the front seat-belt extenders are not communicating on LIN. The bulletin identifies 9CD4 and 9CD5 communication faults, plus 9CD8 and 9CD9 supply faults. It also notes that the diagnostic fault list may not always expose the extender problem. This is a manufacturer example, separate from AXION workshop case studies. Read BMW SIB 61 03 22.
Separate the symptom from the failed part
For the condition covered by that bulletin, the extender function and its wiring connections need attention before concluding that the replacement FRM is defective. It does not establish that every BMW coding failure has this cause. The bulletin is a US publication; the correct repair information must be checked against the vehicle and market.
Send a clear coding history
- State whether the original FRM communicated and why it was replaced.
- Supply both module labels and the complete diagnostic report, including 9CD4, 9CD5, 9CD8 or 9CD9 if recorded.
- Describe whether each seat-belt extender works and whether the problem began before or after module replacement.
- Include the programming tool, the operation attempted and its exact failure message. Keep the original unit.
A brief timeline helps us distinguish an existing vehicle fault from something first noticed during coding. Do not buy another donor solely because a scan tool names the FRM. We can review the information and agree an assessment before further parts are ordered. For a suspected hardware or memory fault, see our BMW and MINI FRM testing and repair assessment.
AXION supports owners and independent garages with module programming and coding enquiries. Send your existing report through our repair enquiry form, or call 07440 134303. We will confirm whether the vehicle is needed at our Didcot workshop or whether a removed module is suitable for UK postal assessment.
