Connecting a cable does not always start a public charging session automatically. On a BMW or MINI with Plug & Charge, the vehicle, charging service and charge point must support the intended arrangement. An authentication problem is a different starting point from a vehicle charging warning.
New charging services have a defined rollout
BMW’s April 2026 announcement describes automatic authentication and card payment for compatible BMW and MINI vehicles, initially through a service launched in Germany with participating points in Germany and Austria. Wider rollout was planned. That announcement is not confirmation that the same payment arrangement works at every UK charger or on every BMW and MINI.
Check the current UK service information for your account and vehicle. A news article about a feature in another market is not a repair instruction, and a missing feature is not necessarily faulty hardware. Keep the exact service name in your enquiry so it is clear whether you mean Plug & Charge or simply charging by cable.
Separate the two sets of messages
Record what the charger displayed and what appeared in the car. A payment or authorisation rejection shown only by the operator needs different investigation from a persistent vehicle fault. Include the location, operator, charge-point identifier and time of the failed session. Keep the session reference if one was issued.
If charging has already worked through another supported payment method, mention that observation. Do not describe it as proof that every part of the car is healthy; it is one useful comparison. There is no need to make repeated paid attempts just to create a record.
Useful details for the account provider
Tell the charging provider whether automatic authentication had previously worked at that point and whether the account, contract or vehicle profile recently changed. Share only the information needed for its support process. Do not send passwords, authentication codes or complete payment-card details to a workshop.
For a vehicle enquiry, include the model, year, software version if readily visible and any diagnostic report. Explain whether ordinary AC charging or other DC sessions have also failed. Clearly label observations from before and after a software update or workshop visit.
Choosing who should investigate
Start with the operator or charging-service support for an account or payment error. Ask AXION about vehicle charging diagnosis if the car reports a fault or the available evidence points to a vehicle-side problem. We will confirm the supported assessment route before booking.
Keep the focus on the observed failure. Replacing an onboard charger, changing ECU software or buying another cable should follow evidence relevant to that operation, not the assumption that every failed public session has the same cause.
