LED Headlight Module Faults: Water Damage, Identification and Coding

A modern headlight can contain several electronic components. If a lamp, daytime-running light or adaptive function stops working, identify the affected function before ordering a replacement module. A matching-looking housing is not enough to establish compatibility.

The headlamp and its modules are a system

HELLA explains that LED lighting can use multiple control or power modules, with vehicle-network communication and different functions assigned to them. The arrangement varies by model and lighting specification. Source: HELLA LED headlamp control-unit guide.

Describe the affected side and function

State left or right from the vehicle’s normal driving orientation, the exact warning and which light functions still work. Include the model year and headlamp type if known. A concern affecting both lamps is different evidence from one failed segment or one non-communicating module.

Mention moisture, collision repairs, a replaced lamp, a battery event or previous programming. Photograph accessible labels on the lamp and module where safe. Include the complete diagnostic report and any electrical test findings. Do not dismantle sealed lighting assemblies simply to identify a possible fault.

Why a replacement may need setup

HELLA describes vehicle-dependent coding, programming or adjustment after replacement. It also lists supply faults, connection faults, mechanical damage and environmental influences among possible concerns. A replacement part and its commissioning requirements should be checked together, rather than assuming a used module is ready to fit.

Repair suitability comes before posting

Ask the workshop which evidence points to the module rather than the lamp assembly, supply or network. Retain the original unit and send both labels if a donor has been purchased. Manufacturer procedures may specify replacement; supported electronics assessment is subject to the exact unit and condition.

Start with body and lighting electronics enquiries or programming enquiries. Confirm the proposed work and any final vehicle setup before removing or posting a unit.

AXION Automotive handles specialist electronics enquiries from Didcot and UK garages. Use our assessment checklist, then send the vehicle details and scan report. Vehicle and component support must be confirmed before booking or posting a unit.
