An EGR warning can lead to conflicting advice about valves, wiring and software. Start with the complete fault report and the vehicle’s engine identification. A recorded flow condition does not, on its own, prove that the valve motor or engine controller has failed.
Three different recorded conditions
P0400 indicates an EGR-flow fault. P0401 concerns insufficient flow and P0402 excessive flow. These are related descriptions, but they should not be treated as identical diagnoses.

The valve is part of an engine-management system
HELLA describes EGR as controlled recirculation of exhaust gas, with the engine controller using inputs including speed, load and coolant temperature. Record the original symptoms and previous work
Include whether the concern involves a warning only, rough running, poor starting or reduced power. Save the complete scan and any test report, including relevant requested and measured values when the workshop has recorded them. State the conditions, not just an isolated number.
Explain whether a valve was cleaned, replaced or adapted, and provide its part number. Record whether the original code returned immediately or after a period of normal use. If several faults appeared after work, include all of them rather than focusing only on the one discussed online.
Discuss the repair scope
Ask the workshop to distinguish gas-flow, actuation, sensing and electrical-circuit concerns using the vehicle-specific procedure. An electronics enquiry should include evidence for the suspected electrical fault. Repairing a controller cannot resolve every cause of an EGR warning.
