Polestar 2 red charging light and a cable that will not release

A cable that will not release is frustrating, but pulling harder can turn the original problem into socket or cable damage. Stop the charging session using the normal instructions for the car and charger, then check the message on the vehicle.

Solid red and flashing red are not interchangeable

The 2022 Polestar 2 manual describes solid red as a charging fault. It also describes a flashing-red condition when a locked vehicle cannot detect a key as the cable-release button is pressed. The exact light behaviour therefore matters. Use the handbook matching your own car rather than assuming every red indication means the lock has failed.

What to record before an enquiry

Take a short note of whether the light was steady or flashing, whether the vehicle was locked and whether the charging session had ended. Record the charging operator and any error displayed by the charging point.

If the cable is still connected, ask the operator for support with its equipment and follow the vehicle’s normal release instructions. Do not use tools to force the connector out or reach into the inlet. Emergency release procedures differ between vehicles and should not be improvised from another model’s video.

When the vehicle needs investigation

A recurring failure after the normal session-ending and unlocking process needs the event history and any stored faults. Tell the workshop whether the problem occurs at one location or has already occurred elsewhere, and whether a warning remains after disconnection.

For AXION, include the model year, light behaviour, dashboard text and previous charge-port or lock work. If another workshop has inspected the car, attach its report and any part identification it recorded.

Ask about assessment availability before purchasing an inlet or actuator. The enquiry needs to distinguish key detection, session state and a possible vehicle fault. A photograph of a red light alone cannot identify the component to replace. If the cable cannot be released through the approved process, arrange assistance where the car is rather than attempting to move it while connected.
