Polestar 2 portable charging slows or stops when the plug gets hot

If portable charging slows down or stops and the plug or control box feels unusually hot, do not keep restarting the session. Record the warning and stop using damaged or overheating equipment. A repeated interruption needs an explanation before charging resumes.

Temperature protection is part of the system

The 2023 Polestar 2 manual explains that its Mode 2 charging cable monitors temperature at the control unit and plug. Protective action can reduce charging or stop it. That describes a safety function; it does not identify which part of an individual installation is at fault.

Mode 2 means a portable charging lead with an in-cable control unit. Check that the instructions you are reading match the lead actually being used.

Split the enquiry into the right areas

An electrician or charging-equipment provider should investigate a suspected property socket, supply or portable-lead problem. Vehicle electronics need a separate assessment when the evidence points to the car. Tell each party what has already been found so neither assumes the other side has been checked.

Include the lead’s make and model, the displayed warning, how long charging ran and whether the interruption followed previous successful sessions. Note visible discolouration or damage from a safe distance. There is no need to recreate overheating to make a video.

Avoid workarounds that hide the symptom

Do not add improvised adaptors, alter the lead or repeatedly reset protective devices. A lower selected charging rate should not be used as a substitute for investigating damaged equipment or a suspect socket. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions and get the affected part assessed.

If a vehicle fault remains after the external issue has been addressed, send AXION the Polestar 2 model year, alert history and any inspection report. We will confirm whether a vehicle assessment is suitable and what information is still needed. Include any existing comparison from a properly installed charging point, but do not undertake further tests against a warning instruction.
