Regulator dropout during an ECU start-up fault

A regulator needs sufficient input headroom to maintain its intended output. A brief incoming supply dip can therefore appear as an internal low-voltage fault.

Interpreting the evidence

Capture the regulator’s input and output during the event and compare them with its specified operating conditions. Check the vehicle supply path before deciding that the regulator itself is defective. The result should explain whether the internal rail fell first or followed an upstream disturbance.

Keep this evidence

Include the start-up condition and any relation to cranking or a large electrical load.

Different regulator designs have different requirements. Do not apply one assumed dropout value to every module.
