An unavailable start-stop function does not automatically indicate an ECU failure. The system has vehicle-specific operating conditions, so begin with the handbook and the message displayed. Record whether the feature previously worked in similar circumstances.
Keep the conditions consistent
Note journey length, engine temperature, climate settings and battery work. Explain whether the system gives a reason for remaining inactive or simply never becomes available. Avoid comparing a cold short journey with a fully warmed drive as though they were equivalent tests.
Separate normal inhibition from a fault
The technician should check the relevant status information and stored faults for this vehicle. Replacing a battery or resetting learned values without assessing the original complaint can hide useful evidence. A feature being inhibited is a control decision that needs interpretation, not a diagnosis by itself.
