Thermal shutdown in a regulator can imitate an intermittent software fault

A module that recovers after cooling may be responding to excessive heat in a supply circuit. Restarting software or clearing codes does not establish why that heat developed.

How to narrow it down

Compare current demand, input voltage and temperature over time. Identify whether the regulator is being overloaded by another fault or lacks its intended thermal path. The investigation should reproduce the relevant operating condition without exceeding the equipment’s safe limits.

What to include with the fault report

Describe how long the module runs before stopping and whether cooling changes the recovery time.

Heat alone does not identify the defective component. A hot regulator may be supplying an abnormal downstream load.
