VAG 00457 and missing communication with J519 body electronics

If a scan shows 00457 alongside a body-electrical problem, keep the full entry and the name of the module that recorded it. A controller can report that another unit is missing. That does not by itself prove which end of the communication path has failed.

Why the module name matters

Ross-Tech’s 00457 reference identifies J519 and describes a missing signal or communication. The listed possibilities concern communication and the wiring or connectors to that unit. Its guidance also distinguishes an intermittent stored entry without a functional problem from a fault accompanied by reduced functionality.

That distinction helps frame the enquiry. Describe what the vehicle actually does alongside the scan result. Do not dismiss a lighting, visibility or other safety-related problem simply because the code is marked intermittent. The symptoms and the current vehicle condition determine how the job should be handled.

Record the functions affected

Write a short list of what stopped working and what still works. Add when the problem started, whether it appears after parking or in wet conditions, and whether anything changed after previous repairs. Existing photographs of water damage or connector condition can help, but do not dismantle trim or electrical units just to obtain them.

For a garage, a complete scan is more useful than a cropped 00457 line. Keep the controller identification, code status and any recorded event information. Say whether the diagnostic tool could communicate directly with J519 at the time of the report. If that changed between visits, label the reports accordingly.

Keep coding and physical diagnosis separate

If a used body module has already been installed, include both part numbers, the reason for replacement and what happened immediately afterwards. Save the original configuration record if the garage has one. Do not assume a donor unit is compatible because its housing looks the same.

A request to check configuration is different from evidence that wiring, supply or the module itself is faulty. The proposed work should explain which question it is intended to answer. Random coding changes make it harder to compare the vehicle before and after the original failure.

Arrange the right inspection

Ask AXION about body-electrical diagnosis with the make, model, year, full scan and affected functions. We will confirm the assessment route before a booking or module dispatch. If the vehicle’s lighting or other essential systems are unreliable, discuss recovery and do not drive solely to demonstrate the symptom.

Garages can include the circuit checks already completed through our trade-support route. Keep the original module and its label available until the job scope is agreed.
