“The wiring has been checked” can describe anything from a visual inspection to a recorded test while the fault was present. When a module resets or a motor works intermittently, ask what was measured and under which conditions. The detail is more useful than a pass-or-fail label.
Continuity answers a limited question
A continuity test can establish a conductive path under the meter’s test conditions. It does not establish how that path behaves at the circuit’s working load. HELLA’s earth troubleshooting guidance includes voltage-drop measurement, where possible under load, as part of investigating supply and earth connections.
A voltage-drop measurement compares two points while the circuit is operating. The interpretation depends on the current, circuit design and manufacturer limits. A reading needs its test locations and operating conditions attached; a number copied into a message without that context is difficult to use.
What belongs in a garage report?
- The affected component and its connector or circuit identification.
- Whether the fault was occurring when the measurement was taken.
- The measured value, units and the two measurement points.
- The requested function, such as cranking or motor operation.
- Any corrosion, previous repairs or damaged terminals found during inspection.
This is a reporting checklist for a competent technician, not an instruction to probe unidentified wiring. Airbag, high-voltage and safety-critical circuits require their specific procedures and equipment.
Before sending a control unit away
A bench assessment and a vehicle wiring assessment answer different questions. Preserve the supply-test evidence so it can accompany the module enquiry. If the symptom depends on the vehicle harness or operating load, discuss a workshop appointment before removing anything.
