BMW i3 charging failure and the difference between KLE and EME

An i3 that will not charge needs a more precise description than “charger faulty”. Did it reject AC charging, stop part way through a session, or display a red light at the socket? Has a supply protective device tripped? These details affect where the investigation starts.

Two module names worth keeping separate

BMW service information SI B61 18 15 describes reduced or unavailable charging on I01 i3 and i3 REx vehicles. It identifies possible hardware faults involving the EME power electronics or KLE charging electronics. The bulletin is a diagnostic reference, not evidence that either unit has failed on your car.

Write down the control unit that stored each fault. A generic scanner description can omit that context. If a garage has already supplied a diagnosis, ask for its scan report and the reasoning behind the suspected component.

A useful charging history

  • Record the model year, battery version if known, and whether the car is an i3 or range-extender i3 REx.
  • Describe the supply used when the fault occurred and whether other charging sessions had previously worked.
  • Include the charging light, dashboard message and any protective-device trip.
  • Mention earlier KLE, EME, charge-port or wiring work.

Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker or keep reconnecting a hot or damaged plug. The building supply and vehicle are separate investigation routes. A qualified electrician handles a suspected fixed-supply problem; the vehicle needs an appropriately equipped technician.

Before buying a used charging unit

Ask for compatibility to be checked against the original unit and vehicle details. A matching connector or a seller’s broad “fits i3” description is not enough. The assessment should also establish whether commissioning or software work would be required if a replacement is chosen.

For an AXION enquiry, attach the diagnostic report and a readable label photograph if one is already available. Do not dismantle high-voltage equipment simply to obtain a photograph. Confirm whether the car or a removed unit is needed before arranging transport.
